Insect repellants are useful this time or year. The active ingredient in most repellants is DEET. Other products may contain picaridin or lemon eucalyptus, which also are effective.   However, do not use products with more than 10% DEET on children. Always check labels for the concentration of DEET. When insect repellants are used with sunscreen, a higher SPF may be necessary. Repellants decrease the effectiveness of sunscreens. Repellants will wash off with water or sweat, so re-apply them as needed. To avoid ticks, permethrin spray may be used on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, etc. Do not apply this to skin. Natural repellants can be useful. These include citronella and soybean oil. For more information, call our office or call the National Pesticide Network at 1-800-858-7378.
